Every couple is different and every videographer is different. You will find that some videographers expressly state that their style is such that they don't do any type of special effects work or any excessive transitions. They prefer a very clean and simple editing style. Other videographers might specialize in effects and they might show examples where they have employed a lot of color or effects in the transitions that they feel add meaning and emotion to the video. If the bride and groom are interested in effects they should certainly look for a videographer who specializes in that. The one danger of using effects is you want it to still look natural and add to the video. They should not be distracting from the subjects or the video. You want to be wary of a videographer who overuses effects because a lot of times that's their way of covering up a mistake. If they have bad lighting or bad color they might try to use an effect to cover up that mistake. Generally speaking, I don't typically use many effects at all. I think that if video is shot properly, it will be really interesting to look at on it's own. There is not much of a reason to use effects other than typography, which is the letters in the menus and letters introducing the couple and things like that. Other than that I really prefer simple clean well-timed transitions.
