Spelling Bee Word List For Tenth Grade

Spelling bees foster good study habits, sportsmanship, and a sense of achievement for tenth graders.

Competitive spelling bees have been organized since 1925. Today, hundreds of students from private, public, parochial, and home schools compete in multiple grueling rounds with increasingly difficult words to attain the coveted championship.

Spelling words are associated with students' grade levels as part of the required vocabulary for each class. By relating spelling words to science, literature, and history concepts, students internalize the definitions and correct usage much more easily, and repeated exposure through class assignments, reviews, and tests helps them memorize the proper spelling. Students learn hundreds of words through various study methods, including rote memorization, repetitive writing, and mock challenges.

During a standard spelling bee, contestants may ask for a word's definition, part of speech, linguistic origin, or use in a sentence. Any of these tricks may help a student recall the correct spelling, and practicing each word in multiple ways insures accurate retention and understanding. This is particularly relevant to students in higher grades, such as tenth graders, as words become more complex and involve homonyms: words that are spelled differently but sound identical. Eye and aye, for example, are pronounced the same but spelled differently, and knowing the definition or proper use helps students differentiate which word to spell.

No spelling list is entirely comprehensive, because different students learn at different rates and may be studying different topics with completely foreign vocabularies. The following words, however, are representative of words tenth graders should be able to spell accurately for a competition.
