Sports Equipment: A Guide To Selecting A Table Tennis Racket

Consumer guide to buying a Ping-Pong or table tennis paddle that fits you and your level of performance. Compares and contrasts the choices available: recreational rackets and high performance rockets.

Basically, there are two types of table tennis rackets, (also known as "paddles") that you can select from. The most common type is known as the "Recreational" racket. This racket is used to play table tennis in informal "just for fun" situations. A Recreational racket is made up of three parts: the handle, the blade, and the attached sheets. The blade, which is the body of the racket, is usually constructed of a thin, hard wood. The sheets, or the coverings of the blade, are usually made of a thin rubber. There is one sheet attached to each side of the blade. And, the handle is usually smooth, rounded wood that your hand can fit comfortably around.

A Recreational table tennis racket can give you a satisfactory level of performance while you are playing an informal game. However, they are not made to perform as well as the next type of racket. Recreational rackets are inexpensive to purchase, and they are available at your local sporting goods store.

The second type of table tennis racket that you can choose is known as the "High Performance " type. This racket is constructed basically the same way as the Recreational type, but with a few important differences. High Performance rackets are, of course, normally used by professional table tennis players who are trying to gain an advantage over their competitors. Sometimes, just the sheer high speed of the ball can overcome a player's opponent.

Even though the handle and the blade are still made of wood, and the sheet is still usually made of rubber, High Performance rackets offer the use more powerful speed and a more - controlled spin to the ball. This is due in part because the rubber on this type of racket is a custom type of rubber. There is "Anti - Spin" rubber, "Pips Out" rubber, and "Long Pips" rubber.

These rubber sheets can be changed as they wear down, wear out, or, as otherwise needed. A Recreational racket, on the other hand, must be completely replaced once its rubber is worn out.

A second reason for the higher speed and spin a High Performance racket puts on the ball, is that the wood is either a special type of hard wood, or, the blade is thicker.

Recreational rackets for playing table tennis are purchased pre-made. They usually come in a standard size, and are built with conventional materials. They are a good choice for beginning table tennis players because they are easier to control than their professional counterparts. If you are looking for a racket that you can do more with, besides just hitting the ball, a High Performance racket might be the right choice for you. They are purchased specially in accordance to your design standards.

For example, instead of having a standard handle, your handle of choice might be a Straight handle, a flared one, the Shakehand variety, or, a Japanese or Chinese - Style Penhold. Their names explain the shapes of the first two types of handles. The "Shakehand" type of handle accommodates the professional table tennis player who holds their racket as if they were shaking hands with it. The "Japanese or the Chinese - Style Penhold" type of handle is held onto by using your thumb and your forefinger. This handle is normally shorter in length than the Shakehand type.

Finally, if you are in the market for a new table tennis racket, you should visit your local sporting goods store and see what they have in stock. You can also perform a search on the Internet to find the right racket for you, but you will need to actually feel the different choices before you decide.
