One of the biggest selling points for wood furniture has always been its ability to look almost new for years. Many homeowners will purchase wood furniture knowing that if it is properly taken care of, it could be a 40 year investment.
Wood furniture, however, has not found a mystery fountain of youth. One way that homeowners and consumers go about ensuring their wood furniture will have a beautiful luster and shine for years is by refinishing it. Refinishing wood is a process that involves stripping the old finish from the wood and replacing it with a new coat of shine. But as times continue to change, so do the ways that homeowners attempt to hold on to the luster of their wood furniture. One added way for homeowners to bring out that shine is by adding a spray glaze when applying a new finish.
Dean Camenares is the owner of East End Wood Strippers in Holbrook, NY, a family-owned business since 1959. He is an expert woodwork restoration specialist who has more than 20 years experience. Camenares said that a spray glaze is a way for a homeowner to add color to their new refinish.
"Glaze refers to applying color, usually pigment color over wood that has already been sealed with some kind of finish," he said. "You use spray glaze when you are evening the color out and may have stained the wood. The good thing about this is that there are still a lot of differences in the wood color."
"By using a glaze, you help to even out the color and make it more uniform," he added. "It is actually color sitting on top of the finishing. By spraying it, you can add a little more here and little less there and you can get an even color."
In addition to adding a slight color change to your furniture, spray glaze also can be used to accentuate the designs and shapes in a piece or add a quality aged look to your furniture. One tip that experts will always give consumers before attempting to add a spray glaze to their furniture is research. As a product that dries quickly to furniture, most experts will suggest that consumers be informed on the process it takes to apply spray glaze.
Other suggestions by experts in the field of refinishing wood include utilizing a fan to help apply the glaze. As a fast drying product, most would assume that a fan would not serve much of a purpose. But, using a fan can help to spread the glaze on evenly helping to prevent any types of imperfections in the job.
Also, be sure not to spray the glaze on the surface too heavily. This can cause the acetone in the spray to damage or wrinkle the finish causing an orange peel effect. Applying too much spray glaze can cause a crackle when you apply a coat of clear glaze to the finished project. So be careful not to overdue when spraying.
Speaking of clear glaze, most experts will suggest addding a coat of clear glaze over the finished product to help seal in the color that you want. Also, even being a fast-drying product, spray glaze can be removed with a special pad in some cases. Just be sure to remove any unwanted glaze prior to applying the clear final coat.
