How to Get SR22 Insurance in Wisconsin

By Faith O

  • Overview

An SR-22 is a document provided by an insurance company to confirm that an individual has sufficient insurance and can be relied upon to be financially responsible in the event of an accident. It is usually required of people who have been convicted of a traffic violation or were in an accident and unable to show proof of liability insurance. In Wisconsin, an SR-22 must confirm liability coverage of at least $25,000 and $50,000 for personal injury or death and $10,000 for property damage.
    • Step 1

Visit the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) website to get the guidelines for SR-22 insurance in the state. There are several reasons for which a person may be required to file SR-22. There is a link in Resources below. For example if you are required to file SR-22, you must carry SR-22 insurance for 3 years. If your SR-22 insurance lapses or expires without renewal, your license and or driving privileges may be suspended and not reinstated until your insurance is reinstated.
    • Step 2

Call your insurance company and find out about SR-22 insurance, or visit the insurance company website. Most companies charge an additional fee for filing. This fee is usually in the range of $25 to $50. Make sure it is a company that is licensed to do business in Wisconsin.

    • Step 3

Contact your insurance agent to help you in shopping for the best SR-22 rates.
    • Step 4

Obtain an actual SR-22 certificate from your insurance company once you have signed up for SR-22 insurance. Some insurance companies send the certificate directly to the Wisconsin DOT or file it electronically.
    • Step 5

Submit the SR-22 certificate to the Wisconsin DOT if the forms are not sent directly by your insurance company. This is especially true if your license has been suspended and you need to get it reinstated.
