Step 1
Visit the Vermont DMV website to get the guidelines for SR-22 insurance in Vermont if you have any questions about the process. There is a link in Resources below. For example, if you are required to file an SR-22, you must carry SR-22 insurance for 3 years. If your SR-22 insurance lapses or expires without renewal, your license and/or driving privileges may be suspended and not reinstated until your insurance is reinstated.
-
Step 2
Call your insurance company and find out about SR-22 insurance, or visit the insurance company website. Most companies charge an additional fee for filing. This fee is usually in the range of $25 to $50.
-
Step 3
Contact your insurance agent to help you in shopping for the best SR-22 rates.
-
Step 4
Obtain an actual SR-22 from your insurance company once you have signed up for SR-22 insurance. The state of Vermont accepts SR-22 certificates only directly from the insurance company, and any alternative documentation provided by an insurance agent will not suffice.

Step 5
Submit the SR-22 certificate to the Vermont DMV if the forms are not sent directly by your insurance company. This is especially true if your license has been suspended and you need to get it reinstated.
