Stained Glass Mosiac Instruction

A stained glass mosaic is one of the most simple stained glass projects for beginners in the field. Here are instructions!

A glass mosaic is one of the most simple stained glass projects for beginners in the field. It consists of a number of scraps of stained glass arranged in random design, bonded to a surface of clear glass. It is a great alternative to the more complex and expensive stained glass windows that present specific pictures and can be just as beautiful.

To begin, place a piece of clear glass onto a plywood work surface and nail strips of ¾ inch by ¾ inch wood in a frame around it to keep it from sliding. Be sure to cover the side of the strip facing the glass with masking tape to prevent it from becoming stuck to the glass. Take your scraps of colored glass, smear a clear epoxy on the bottoms one by one and place them epoxy-side-down onto the clear glass to create your design. You can also cover the surface of the clear glass with epoxy and set the scraps down into it. Pour a little additional clear epoxy in the spaces between the pieces and let it harden.

When you are certain the epoxy has dried, take a tube of liquid solder and squeeze it between the pieces, making sure to leave no empty spaces or cracks. Smooth as needed, taking care not to leave any on top of the stained glass pieces, and allow to dry. The finished product will be a sturdy construct of stained glass with lead colored streaks between them. It can now be framed for hanging in front of a window or anywhere else you have need for a pane of colorful glass.
