Step 1
Decide which entity you would like to register under--a corporation, s-corp, sole proprietorship, limited liability corporation or partnership. If you are starting a nonprofit business, you can file for a nonprofit corporation. Each entity has its various tax rules and benefits. Corporations and limited liability corporations have more protection for the owner against lawsuits than other entities.
-
Step 2
Decide what you will be naming the company and which entity you would like to register under (corporation, non-profit corporation, LLC, partnership, s-corp). Go to Florida's Division of Corporations website (see Resources). Click "Document Searches." Choose the appropriate menu item to search for your company name to make sure another company with the same name is not already in existence.
-
Step 3
Go back to the home page, then click "Electronic Filing." Depending on the type of entity, choose the appropriate menu item to file the documents to register your business. You will need a credit card to complete the process. The fee varies depending on which entity you have chosen.
-
Step 4
Go to the IRS website to apply for a federal employer identification number (see Resources). You can apply online and have your federal employer identification number within a matter of minutes in most cases. This process is free. Click "Apply for Registration," then follow the instructions based on the type of entity you registered as.
-
Step 5
Go to the Florida Department of Revenue's page to apply for the sales tax license and/or exemption (see Resources). This process can also be done online and it is also free. Secure the proper licensing if you are a nonprofit corporation. This information is outlined on the website.
-
Step 6
Visit the State of Florida's occupational licensing page to find out which occupational licenses you may need (see Resources). Occupational licenses are given at the county or city level, depending on your county. The State of Florida's occupational licensing page will help direct you to the appropriate government authority for your county.

Step 7
Obtain insurance for your business. Different businesses have different types of insurance. Automotive businesses use garage keeper's insurance. There is insurance for retail businesses. You may have to add a rider if you sell food. Always get at least three insurance quotes, as prices can vary, as does coverage, for each insurance company.
