Starting a Small Business

  • Overview

When you've come up with a great idea for a business that you know you'll love to do for years to come, open the business the right way. There are certain steps you must take to make your business legal and to make your first year a success. Once your business is legal and off the ground and running, it's up to you to get new customers and allow the business to flourish.
    • Step 1

Write a business plan. You'll need to draw up projections such as daily sales, overall revenue, overhead costs, maintenance, promotion and employees. When calculating all of the factors of what you'll need to start your business, it's a sound idea to round up your projections. This is so you know you've given yourself a bit of extra budget for unexpected expenses.
    • Step 2

Seek financial support, if you need it. Bring your finalized business plan into a bank or investment firm. You'll be expected to explain your business, how you expect to make money and whom you are attempting to gain as a client base. In this process the potential lender may ask you to make modifications to your plan to make it a more profitable investment.

    • Step 3

Select a location for your business. Once you've chosen a location, you'll begin purchasing all of the equipment you'll need and hire the employees you can afford. Many people start their small businesses from their own homes and then move to a larger office as needed.
    • Step 4

Register your business with your state Secretary of State office. By taking this action, you are making your business official with your state government. This way, no one else can claim your business name in your state.
    • Step 5

Get the appropriate licensing, if necessary. For example, if you are opening a home improvement contractor business, you should obtain any necessary local licenses and insurance. If you are starting a private investigation firm, you likely need to be licensed with your state government and obtain insurance.
