A sub is the speaker but it does not put out any high end sound; it is for low end. For example, if something is exploding in the movie, you get more of the rumble effect with a sub. And then, for example, the center speaker is more directed at the dialog, so you get more effects on it; for example if someone drops a screwdriver or something like that, you get that sound from the smaller outer speaker. So when someone is speaking you get that from the center speaker.

You can buy a 6.1 system which comes with all the speakers (front left and right, rear left and right, a center dialog box and a sub), and the amplifiers come with additional inputs where you can add on a CD player that also plays radio.
Right now, your selection is between the 5.1 and 6.1 systems. We also have a 4.1, but that is pretty outdated. The 6.1 just has an added center dialog box. In some packages they will come with a sub. But the center dialog box is optional.
