Sun Block Protection: Which Spf Should You Be Using For What Activities?

Identifying which SPF sunblock will work best for different activities.

The suns rays are your skins worst enemy. Two types of sun rays that it is important to protect your skin from are ultraviolet-B and ultraviolet-A. Over exposure to UVA and UVB rays can cause pre-mature aging and skin cancer. UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and are mostly responsible for sunburns. UVA rays are longer wavelength rays that can damage the skin's connective tissue and lead to premature aging. One in six people will develop skin cancer, and 90% of these cancers are due to UV exposure from the sun. Since severe sunburns before the age of 18 increase your risk of cancer, sunblock is vital for people of all ages. This article will help you choose which sunblock is right for your outdoor activities.

If you swim or play sports the best sunblock for you will be one that is waterproof. An SPF of 25 or higher is recommended and the sunblock should be applied at least 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. A spray-on sunblock is ideal for putting the protection onto your hair and scalp as well as your face and skin. When applying the sun protection, spray it generously onto each area of your body and rub it in evenly. You should re-apply the product after exercise or swimming. Try to find a sunblock that is alcohol-free so it will not dry or irritate your skin.

If you are attending an out-door event such as a picnic or barbecue you might want to think about using a self tanner with an SPF 15. Self tanners today are very natural looking and give your skin a healthy glow, while at the same time protecting you from harmful UV rays. To apply most of these tanners you need to shower, ex foliate and apply the product 2-3 hours before an event to achieve maximum color. However, always follow the directions on the label.

To protect yourself while running your daily activities you will want to apply a daily face sunblock. Look for sunblocks that contain the ingredient Titanium Dioxide. Titanium Dioxide is a natural, chemical-free sunblock that is less irritating to a sensitive area such as the face. You will want to apply a daily face sunblock with at least an SPF of 25. For women, apply the sunblock underneath your foundation and powder to ensure maximum coverage.

For children with a busy schedule of activities sunblock is also very important. A quick and easy alternative to messy lotions are handy SPF wipes. The wipes are pre-moistened with sunscreen to easily wipe over and protect the face and body. They are easy to carry in a purse or diaper bag and also allow for frequent touch-ups. Follow the label on the package.

Protection from UV rays is just as important in the winter months, as in the summer months. For an active outdoors-men a sunblock for the face and hands, as well as lip balm with SPF is important. Lip balm with at least an SPF 15, will not only moisturize your chapped lips, but help protect you from those rays that sneak through on cloudy days. Many product lines also make a waterproof balm with SPF for the nose, cheeks and ears for those that love to ski.

As you can see there are many sunblocks out there to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Choosing the right one for your activities is important, but even more important is wearing sunscreen every time your out in the elements.
