Basically, DHA, which is Dihydroxyacetone, it is the self tanning agent; it doesn't produce a real tan, but increases the skin melanin level. It creates an appearance of the tan by way of development of a brown skin coloring from the action of DHA. It is an active ingredient in the self tanner, and it is limited to the upper layers of the skin. It involves the reaction between DHA and skin proteins. DHA is going to react with amino acids and the amino groups of the skin's Carotene to produce brown colored compounds. So that's what you get when you put on the self tanner. The process takes place in the outer layers of the epidermis.

You want to make sure that you are preparing your skin properly as far as exfoliation, which is very, very big with self tanning. If you don't exfoliate, you are not going to get a tan. You need to take care of their skin in order for the self tanning to really work. You must cleanse properly and moisturize properly with the correct moisturizer. You don't want to use a lot of mineral oil-based products when you do self tanning. We recommend that you don't apply moisturizer. What you need if you are going to apply moisturizer to your skin, you need an approved moisturizer without mineral oil. It has to be two hours before put your self tanner on.

I would try stay and away from any of the store brands that you can buy in the grocery store, because they usually giving you an orange tan. We definitely recommend using proper cleansers on your skin as well. So the proper pH of the skin is very important, because that can affect your color as well. If you don't use the proper soap when you are cleansing, it can stipulate a natural acid for your skin. It can produce an undesirable color. So exfoliation, moisturizing, and proper cleansing is very, very important in self tanning.
