There are basically two types of diagnosis. One might be considered alcohol or drug abuse. And one might be considered alcohol and drug dependence. Now make no mistake, alcohol is a drug. For some reason people differentiate the two but alcohol is a drug. Abuse is when someone may be drinking excessively and getting drunk. Most teenagers are diagnosed with abuse because they haven't had years of drinking or smoking pot or anything like that. In the beginning stages, they are getting together with their friends on the weekend and drinking to the point where they are completely intoxicated, drunk, and blacking out. That's abuse. Dependence is when they can't survive without the drugs sometimes. Dependence is when they are incapable of abstaining from alcohol and/or drugs.

That is, of course, the more severe stage when a patient's or individual's lives are starting to be affected because of their substance abuse. Possibly they start to alienate themselves from friends and family or their friends and family are trying to alienate themselves from the individual. The dependence is actually turning people off and it's getting people angry or fed up with them. That's certainly an indication.
