Yes, there are all kinds of patterns. There are literally thousands of traditional quilt pattern blocks from your basic nine-patch to high style and these are patterns that may be repeated throughout the quilt. So you look at a quilt and it may consist of 20 blocks. And each block might have the same design or there might be 10 blocks of one design and other blocks of another design. People just mix and match and that's more of the traditional style of quilting. The more modern art quilts are more like paintings. There is no set pattern or style. People just go crazy creating things.

What a lot of people do when they start to design a quilt, they literally draw a square and do a rough drawing of what they want their quilt to look like and then they cut the fabric to match. Some people improvise and just create the quilt from the scratch as they are doing it. A lot of people now use computer software to design a quilt on a computer first and then they can print out the pattern.

Patchwork quilting is a name for more traditional quilting that involves standard blocks.

The second artistic part of quilting is the design you do with the thread. You may look at a quilt and it's got beautiful blue and white patterns, but then when you look closer you may see intricate designs with the threading itself. People are able to do that by hand quilting and if they do it on the machine it's called free motion quilting. It is moving the fabric in and out of the machine to make the designs patterns. So there are really two artistic aspects in making quilt. One is designing the quilt patterns of fabrics and the second would be the designs with the threading.
