Probably the top-selling family genealogy program is called Family TreeMaker. It is an excellent program for beginners because it helps you structure your work as you enter in information, for example, there is a spot where you enter your name and your birth date and where you were born and where you got married and who you married and your kids. The program helps you to organize your information and also shows you what you're missing.

The program I personally prefer is RootsMagic. RootsMagic is sold online (http://www.rootsmagic.com/) and it is not as easy to use for a beginner. There is also free software that has been produced by the Church of Latter Day Saints. About.com (http://genealogy.about.com/od/software_reviews/) has a section that reviews all the family history programs. You can do a search for "family history programs reviews" on any of the large search engines for more sites. These sites tell you what the program does, how it works and you can choose the one for your price range. The genealogy software people are sometimes, I think, a lot brighter than some of the other software people because they have means to import and export the information from one program to another. No matter what program you start with you can always transfer your information to another one if you wish.
