There are lots of techniques. Again it depends on the project you're doing. If you're stitching there are several different stitches. I prefer brick stitch myself. That's the first one I learned and so it's very easy for me. There's also the peyote stitch and the square stitch. With the peyote stitch and the brick stitch, each row is slightly offset from each other like a brick - for stability. With the square stitch, the beads are all lined up. So depending on your pattern you might want one or the other stitch, and you have to know how to do the stitches.

I've got tutorials on my site for brick and square stitch and then there are other stitches that make tubes for say necklaces. There are tons of different stitches just using thread and bead alone. If you're going to do something like flowers then you have to know the technique of how to take the beads that are on the wire and wrap the wire around itself in a stable way that forms petals and then you need to learn how to bunch the petals together in a way that forms a flower. I've got tutorials for that on my website as well. And again there are books that teach all this stuff.

And then there are techniques for using beads on clothes. Pretty much anything you want to do with beads is already out there, someone's probably already got a technique to do it and you can probably find a free example online or in books.

Where can one get ideas for different projects?

I tend to get my ideas looking at other people's beaded projects. I don't like to duplicate anything anyone has done. Say someone has a beaded fairy, I'll say that's nice and I'll design my own beaded fairy. But definitely buying patterns or getting free patterns online, that's a good way to practice.

When I do flowers I have some books on beaded flowers that give me specific instructions for how to make a particular flower. But also, if I see nice pictures of real flowers, I save them to my computer and then if I want to make that flower I kind of pick it apart in my head and make my own. Again it really depends on someone's level of experience. I would say ideas come from anywhere because beading is so versatile.

What is beading graft paper?

If you are doing brick or peyote stitching you can't plan a pattern on normal graft paper because they have offset rows. Also depending on the beads you are using, some beads are very square, but more often beads tend to be longer than they are high when you look at them face on. So I have made my own beading graft paper that people can print off from my website for free.

There is also beading software out there to help you make patterns, but I have never used any of it. I've got links to it on my links page, but I'm very clear that I haven't tested it and I don't know if it's any good or not.
