There are underwater metal detectors. On any normal metal detector, you can put the detector head, the search coil and the stem in the water. For instance, if something was in a shallow stream, you could go in there. With an ordinary metal detector if you put the control box underwater, within 30 seconds you've got a dead metal detector. So you don't go in the water with an ordinary metal detector. There are underwater detectors and most of them are rated for up to 200 feet in depth. I don't swim, so I have my underwater detector. I can have the waves breaking over me and I can be finding things in 5 feet of water. That detector will function, but if I took my regular standard metal detector into the ocean surf, it wouldn't even take 30 seconds for it to die. An underwater detector does cost more as everything (including the headphones) has to be waterproofed.

It's no better quality, but generally speaking, you take a $600 detector that you would like to use and go looking for the same qualifications in an underwater detector and it will cost about $800. It will be about $200 more than a similar land detector. So there is not as many of those sold and they are a little bit more complicated. If you bounced it around and break that waterproof seal, you've got a dead detector.
