Things to do for kids and children in hartford

An idea list of fun and exciting things to do with kids in Hartford, Connecticut, on a modest budget.

Though Hartford, Connecticut, may not spring to mind as the hot spot of the nation, it can be an enjoyable town, especially for the young or the young-at-heart. A little planning, an adventurous soul and a modest budget can make a memorable trip.

In the center of Hartford is Bushnell Park, America's oldest public park. Free of admission and well cared for, Bushnell Park offers a number of trails and outdoor play centers to explore. Begin at the Sailor Memorial Arch, a brownstone arch in commemoration of the Civil War Veterans, and walk through the park. There are over one hundred tree species labeled in the park - a great scavenger hunt game. In fact, a brochure is offered at the entrance to track and help find many of the unique trees. Formal tours of the park, as well as an inside tour and climb to the top of the Sailor Memorial Arch, are given for free on Thursdays, May through October. As an extra bonus for your walking efforts to the center of the park, and a great surprise for the very young, is an antique carousel that runs throughout the year with a fifty-cent charge per ride.

For the truly romantic, or those that can't resist a fabulous picture opportunity, Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens is a must. Nine hundred rose species, greenhouses, nature walks, perennial and rock gardens lead to a Pond House where a quick snack can be enjoyed with free concerts or performance from local artists. During the summer, many festivals and kid-friendly events, including fun runs, egg hunts or obstacle courses, are offered to keep those energetic young ones occupied.

History buffs or those that love to play and pretend will enjoy the tours at the Old State House, the Governor's Mansion, and Capitol. For a minimal fee, and many free tours, historical reenactments, hands-on crafts and changing exhibits make each place unique and special. Don't miss the Center Church and Ancient Burying Ground where the headstones create a sense of history and interest. If lucky enough to visit during October, plan on attending a graveyard tour - ghosts included.

Continue the history lesson by stepping back in time to the 1800's to tour and explore Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe's houses and museum. Each house has remained as lived in by these famous authors so visitors get a sense of life as if was. The museum and grounds are fun to explore with hands-on activities for the young and adventurous. Complete your visit with a purchase at the gift store of "The Adventures of Huck Finn," or "Uncles Tom's Cabin." That way, the fun can continue each night before bed.

The Hartford Police Museum in downtown Hartford features pictures and artifacts from the history of the Police Department. Meeting the city's finest and sitting behind the wheel of a patrol car is exciting for anyone - just don't volunteer to be locked up!

For hands on fun, both the Wadsworth Atheneum and Science Center of Connecticut are required. Live animal demonstrations, a planetarium, construction-building contests, hands-on crafts, experiment and computer fun will make it hard to leave.

End the day with an ice cream treat from the agriculture center of the University of Connecticut. Stores with this homemade and creamy ice cream are situated around the city. Take home an "I Love Hartford" souvenir to recollect the fun, days and months later.
