During the warmer summer and fall months, an hour inside this professional skating arena is a perfect way to escape the sun and get some exercise, too. The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium is the perfect way to while away an entire day with the kids in Fort Myers. Located at 345 Ortiz Avenue, this facility boasts a planetarium, live animal shows, a wildlife sanctuary, housing for injured wildlife, aquariums, tanks, and an amazing butterfly development. Spend some time outdoors visited injured eagles. Photograph some amazing, colorful sights in the butterfly development (you can't simply call this a "butterfly garden," as it encompasses so much more, including a breeding facility and butterfly "hospital.") and enjoy these creatures actually lighting on your head or shoulder. A trip inside the building adjacent to the butterflies finds a large variety of reptiles, turtles, and other curiously "crawly" creatures. There are live animal shows scheduled daily, where kids and parents alike can often handle some of these exotic specimens. En route from the animal exhibits to the planetarium building, stop on the bridge and gaze at the alligators in the river below. Manatee Park is a fun and relaxing outdoor adventure. Located just of I75, go east for 1.5 miles at exit 141 to 1091 S.R. 80 in Fort Myers. Located on a man-made canal where manatees come for refuge, rest and warmer water during the chillier season, it is common to spot at least one of these glorious creatures for at least a short glimpse. Magnifiers are available to enhance the view. A lovely, peaceful garden filled with butterflies and local plants make this park the perfect spot for a family picnic. Tables are available. The staff at Manatee Park offers workshops on local wildlife, including of course the manatees. Most programs are free of charge, as is admission to Manatee Park. For the incredibly brave family adventure, take the kids parasailing. Even very young children can parasail when accompanied by a parent. Ranalli Parasailing is located at the beach, at 2000 Estero Boulevard. They feature sailing adventures to heights of 850 through 1200 feet. If a break from the wild side is needed, check out Smuggler's Cove Adventure Golf at 17450 San Carlos Boulevard. Noted as one of the best miniature golf facilities in the region, the course is meticulously maintained and its water exhibits are fun for all.
