Most states in the country have a licensing division that monitors and regulates substance abuse treatment centers. My recommendation would be to contact the state division that licenses treatment centers. That would be a start. There are also other crediting organizations. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organization is an organization that creates certain standards while providing quality care. That's something that's more national. It doesn't only create standards for substance abuse agencies, but also hospitals and other health care facilities. If an agency is accredited by the Joint Commission, then at least the consumer or the potential patient knows that the agency is operating under a certain level of standards that another one may not be. Otherwise, it's like anything else. There are good agencies and bad agencies.
