When decorating your home, whether you are concentrating on one room or the entire house, one of the first things to decide is your color scheme. You may be the type of person who already has favorite colors and you know exactly which colors you want to use. Or you may be starting completely from scratch and wondering where to begin in your color decision.

Kathy Dodson, award-winning interior decorator and owner of Decorating Dens, offers a few pieces of advice when choosing your decorating color pallet. She says that every year there is a popular color. "A group of people, The Color Market Group, meets and decides what the colors are going to be for the upcoming year. They influence everything from fabric for home décor furniture to grocery stores for soap dispensers." Once these colors are selected, you will begin to see them everywhere, including in your favorite decorating magazines.

She says that staying up on the colors for each year will really help you. "The most popular things are going to end up being everywhere. They could be in your soap dishes, soap colors, washcloths, and towels." She says that the good news is that when a color is part of the selection of the Color Market Group, you can guarantee that it remain popular for some time. "When all those companies produce things in the 'new' color, it is going to be sticking around for awhile."

Dodson says, however, that there are certain colors that are always going to be used in interior decorating. Two of these lasting colors are various shades of green and blue. "These are good colors because they appear in nature and everybody is comfortable with them." She says that these are classic colors that will never leave the interior decorating color pallet. If you use these colors when decorating, you will most likely not feel like you need to completely redo your home in the near future.

When choosing your colors for your home, Dodson warns that you should try to avoid using overly trendy colors that are going to come and go out of popular decorating schemes quickly. "The bright colors, like fuchsia, might be in one season, but they probably are not going to be around the next season. So be careful redoing your whole house in some of those real trendy colors." She says that if you want to pick some colors that are going to last and that you will not have to redo quickly, there are around twenty colors that come and go in a year's time. Therefore, you should try to avoid using those as your main colors in your decorating scheme. She recommends paying attention to the colors you are seeing everywhere before settling on your color decision.

It is also important to not only think about what colors are popular, but to also find colors that you enjoy and that create a feeling that you want to have while in your home. You may prefer soothing colors that make you feel relaxed or you may feel more at home around bright vibrant colors. If you incorporate the current decorating trends with what colors make you feel the best, you are sure to have a beautiful home that you will enjoy for years to come.
