For some costume jewelry, I am sure you can use soap and water with a damp cloth. Some jewelers say to take it in for tarnish removal. Don't assume that you could bathe with your jewelry on. Some women do that. It's best to take it off, use a dust cloth, and rub the dirt off. Costume jewelry should last forever.
As for pearls, you should put them in a soft bag and keep them away from the rest of your metal jewelry, because it will scratch them. I have heard some people say that it will also just keep the pearls looking shiny and nice, but I don't know that for sure. I know about the metal scratching the pearls. Pearls have more upkeep in general, so we actually give our customers pouches and suggest that they store them in there. Just don't store them in water or something. It's common sense, really.
