It depends on what their goals. The best thing to do would be to consider what your goals are. Is it to get in shape? Is it to develop more focus and concentration and work the mental side of it? Is it to do some sort of internal exercise? So, you have the chi cung and tai chi that develop how to work your energy internally and that might be the focus to somebody who sees that mystical side of the martial art. When there is the combative of things if a guy studies tai chi, he is not going to be able to use it on the SWAT team.
Yes, so he might look and say well you know I can study this or this. So, boxing may help a little bit with my hands, but what I am going to do if some guy comes and tackles me and my boxing is gone.
So, you would look for a school that's a little bit more appropriate for the combative side. So, they are going to have to ask is it health, external health or internal health? Is it mental what they're looking for or is it martial and combative? And then the behavior part might be the other one for kids or adults. You know there is a lot of kids and adults that say, I want more discipline and structure in my life. I want to really understand what discipline is all about. You know I don't really think about what I eat, I sit and watch TV all day and I am not motivated. For those with kids, they might say, he won't concentrate, he won't look me in eye and he has attention deficit disorder. They need to have more structure and focus and they come to martial arts for that. The little trick nowadays is that the old martial will help you with all of that. Now that people have transitioned from art to sport, sport doesn't help you. So when people come to martial arts instead of sports seeking that, it's almost a misrepresentation on a lot of the martial art schools' part.
And that's something that people need to be careful of.
