With so many beautiful decorative and personalized ceramic plates available, one may be tempted to add quite a few to a personal collection. However, possession sometimes equals burden when it comes to finding a place for all your lovely plates!

President of LDA Creations, Inc. for 10 years and an employee in manufacturing prior to that, Cheryl Lyons declares that collectors of ceramic plate will find many elegant ways to display them.

"Some people will use simple brass hangers to place them on walls," Ms. Lyons begins. "There are quite lovely wooden trains with glass fronts where you can actually put the plate inside the train. You also have your typical china covered presentation, and we have people who actually use them in their table service as well."

She adds that plate holders commonly work well for individual plates, although some models are available to hold up to six plates. "A display rack is more of a small shelf where you would have two or three plates, and some sort of decorative rack that would hang on the wall," Ms. Lyons notes. "Display shelves are a larger kind of accessory where you might have a groove surface on the edge of the longer shelf that would be mounted on the wall."

She further explains that the primary difference between plate holders and display racks is scale. "Holders are for one or two pieces, racks might be two to three pieces, and shelves might be three to six pieces," she explains.

When it comes to cost, collectors have a variety of options, depending on how much they would like to spend. "Plate holders are usually $5 or less," Ms. Lyons says. "Display racks are probably going to be more in the $10 to $50 range, depending on how fancy you get. Display shelves are probably going to be in a $25 to $100 range."

Plates may also look nice in a corner curio cabinet with glass doors, glass walls and individual shelving, sometimes also made of glass. Merely place the plate on a small plate holder and position it in the cabinet where it will receive the most attention.

Best bets on how to display a decorative plate to maximize on aesthetic value:
-Invest in a couple of brass hangers if you want to hang your ceramic plates directly on the wall.
-Consider wooden trains with glass fronts. You place the plate safely inside the train for display.
-Purchase some plate holders to accommodate one or up to six individual plates.
-A decorative display rack provides a home for two or three ceramic plates.
-Display shelves are usually fairly long and provide a great option if you have a large collection of plates.
-If they are not too elaborate, some decorative plates may function as nice serving ware during special events.
-Stand decorative plates up carefully in a curio cabinet.

To determine which display method is best for your needs, consider the number of plates in your collection. If you cannot decide, perhaps you can use a display shelf in one room and a couple of plate holders - or another combination of displays - in another room.
