Make sure you have a smoke detector; that is the number one thing. Be aware or pay attention to the things that are going on in and around your apartment. Unfortunately, you can't control what your neighbor is doing next door to you, but you can make sure you have an early chance of escaping a place if there is a fire next door. If you have a smoke detector, that would give you a better opportunity to get out of the apartment. Make sure that you have at least two ways out of that apartment. Sometimes you are in apartments that don't have back doors or you could be upstairs. You have to have an exit plan in place before that kind of thing happens.
