When asked "What are some tips for large dining room remodeling?" Jason Flippo, who is the owner and president of Signature Home Improvement Inc, which is a business that concentrates on remodeling kitchens and living areas, offers these suggestions: "I think hard wood floors look great in a dining room. The right color, like a real rich cherry or real dark walnut type floor, could really go good with the right paint scheme and the right lighting. Most people are putting in the crown molding around the ceilings. If you have a ceiling that is not so tall, you want to use a small crown. Some of our customers have dining room ceilings that are 12, 14, or 16 feet high. With big tall ceilings, you can do multiple steps of crown molding."
As far as doing a complete remodel of a large dining room, Jason says, "In a small room, if you put too many things in there, you could make it too cluttered. You can change the colors, the floors, and light fixtures in a bigger room. You can get away with bigger light fixtures." And bigger furniture pieces such as china hutches, side tables and the dining table itself. If you already have a beloved set, such as a family inheritance, all new pieces can be customized to complement it. Or you have the option of mixing a few contrasting pieces in for drama. If you do take this route, make sure the floor plan is laid out so that the pieces balance each other, with an equal number of both on opposite sides, so it looks deliberately done and not just miss-matched.
One of the best investments you can make is a set of durable dining room chairs. You can have them custom made also, buy them with a matching table or collect them as you go at flea markets and garage sales. When going for the eclectic look, it is best to buy the chairs in sets of two that will sit opposite of each other at the dining room table. When it comes to the two head seats, if you do not have them matching each other, try to find both in a larger scale at least. This way they sort of resemble a throne.
When laying out a floor plan, one must take into consideration the traffic flow of the space. This is especially true in a dining room where there will be people walking around the table, while taking their seat or serving the food. There should be enough room where a guest can pull out his or her chair in order to get in and out of it without trying "squeeze through". When remodeling a large dining room, some tend to get over zealous with the amount of space they have and manage to clutter up what is meant to be a spacious room.
