What are some tips for lighting the outside of my home? When adding lighting to trees or landscaping around the house, always be aware of electricity and voltage to avoid being electrocuted. One of the biggest...
One of the biggest mysteries in the insect world revolves around their uncanny attraction to light. Seems like no matter where you are, as soon as a light comes on after dark, bugs will inevitably be drawn to the light.
Some experts say that insects use light sources such as the moon for navigation purposes. With that in mind, it is believed that insects will at times confuse an artificial light source such as a light bulb with light from the moon.
Other experts say that some bugs orient their lives with the position of the sun, such as bees. This would mean that when an insect is attracted to a light bulb, the reason could be because it is drawn to the heat that the light bulb gives off.
Whatever the reason that insects are attracted to lights, it doesn't solve our problem of having them buzzing around and being pests. Most experts will agree that bugs are naturally attracted to light, but there are ways to limit the number of bugs your light draws.
Anthony Donovan is president of Lighting Tech and Design. He opened the company five years ago and has had 12 total years in the business of lights and fixtures. Donovan said that the color of the light can lessen the amount of bugs dramatically.
"Bugs don't like dull lights," he said. "The less yellow you have in the light source the less they can see it. They really like blues and bright lights."
With the issue of bugs and lights being so prevalent in just about every area, experts suggest that you take these factors into consideration before deciding where to put lights.
For example, if you have a deck on the back of your home that you use for family as well as social gatherings, having a light too near the area where everyone will be sitting could be a hassle. Now, add on the factor that most decks are great for grilling and enjoying the weather, adding a light source to great smelling food can only hurt your chances of getting through a meal without bugs causing a problem.
In these instances, consumers should look for alternate ways to light their deck. Maybe putting a light off to the side away from the food and gathering area is a good idea. Another tip would be to mount the light on the top of the house allowing it to shine down on the required area. As we've learned, bugs are attracted to the bulb itself and not the light that comes from the bulb.
However, whenever attempting to give your home the perfect outdoor lighting setup, experts suggest you always do your homework. Donovan said that having a plan to execute will help eliminate any possible mistakes.
"First you have to figure out where your electricity is, whether it's coming from underground or whatever," he said. "Next, figure out what type of lighting you need. If you are lighting up trees or landscapes systems, it's generally best to use low voltage lights so you won't get electrocuted."
