There are many different choices when deciding on a venue for your wedding. Some people find a certain charm in having an at-home backyard wedding. This type of venue can be a lovely setting for a wedding, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
Kyle Hayden, the Event Coordinator for Strong Events, which specializes in event decorating and design for theme parties, has planned a number of backyard weddings. He says that some backyards lend themselves to being more appropriate for weddings than other backyards might. For instance, it is important to take into consideration how many guests you will have and compare that number to the size of your backyard. Some backyards may be able to accommodate 300 people, while others may only be able to provide adequate space for 30 guests.
Hayden says that many times the homeowners have not had as many guests at their house as they may invite to the a wedding. Keeping that in mind, there are several extra arrangements that might need to be made which you have not thought of. One example is the number of restrooms in your home. Hayden says that if you invite 300 people to the wedding and only have three restrooms this could pose a problem. He says that throughout the entire planning process it is important to keep in mind the number of guests who will be attending the wedding so that you can accommodate for all of them.
You should also think about any extra equipment you would need for the wedding. For instance, you may need to rent chairs, a buffet table, or even a dance floor. In this situation, you would need to plan where all of these extra items will go and make sure that they will fit in the backyard along with all of the guests.
Another element to take into consideration is whether or not you will have enough electrical power for the wedding. Hayden suggests that you bring in an extra generator: "You may want extra lights in the backyard after the sun goes down if you don't have outdoor lighting. You may not have the outlets or the power to accommodate that, so you have to get a generator."
Hayden also points out that when planning a backyard wedding or any outdoor wedding, you have to plan for the unexpected: "You might get rain that day, so you need to have a tent on reserve, or an alternative backup just in case." He says that it is always important to have a "Plan B" so that if anything unexpected does occur on the wedding day you will be prepared and the wedding will not be ruined.
Once you have thoroughly thought through the wedding logistics and have decided that your backyard is appropriate for the wedding and the guests, you can begin the at-home backyard wedding planning process. With the right attention to detail and an accurate plan, you can have the backyard wedding of your dreams.
