There are many things you can do to save money on energy costs during the summer months. Air conditioning expert Annette Floridia says that one of the biggest mistakes people make is turning off their air conditioning systems in an effort to save money. "People don't realize that is costs more money to get the home cooled off again than it would to just raise the temperature and leave the system on and running," she says

Another thing she warns against is turning the air conditioning system off and opening windows if you live in a climate with high humidity. "You do not want too much humidity to build up in your home. We do not recommend people ever cutting off their air conditioner. That is the worse thing that you can do. You want to make sure that your system runs long enough to pull humidity out of your home. A system that is too big for the home cools the house too quickly and can leave too much humidity. The system then constantly has to run to fight that humidity level. The important thing is that your system does come on and stay on long enough to pull the humidity out of your home," Floridia advises.

Besides keeping your air conditioning system on and running, Floridia says that the other important thing is to keep your air filter clean so that air can flow through and the system can run efficiently. A dirty filter will cause the components of the air conditioner to strain and possibly burn out or freeze. Replacing or cleaning your filter once a month is also a good way to ensure good air quality inside your home.

You will also want to make sure the air ducts, vents, and registers are all open so the air flow is not restricted. You should also check that all vents and registers are free from obstructions by furniture or draperies. Doors should be left open of cracked if there is not sufficient room underneath for air to escape to the return air system.

You can help your air conditioning out by using ceilings to circulate air. This will reduce the work of the air conditioner and help save on energy costs in a very big way. You may even want to investigate installing a whole house fan to further aid with air circulation. Another way to reduce cooling costs is to invest in a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat allows you to set the temperature during the night while you are sleeping and when you are going to be away from home thereby avoiding cooling your home unnecessarily.

If your air conditioning system is older you may want to consider replacing the unit with a newer more energy efficient model. You will see significant savings on your energy bills by upgrading to a more energy efficient system. The rule of thumb is that if you increase efficiency by 50% you will also save 50% in energy costs.

Other ways to make your air conditioning system and home more energy efficient include planting trees for shade around your home, installing reflective window film, and keeping your shades and blinds closed.
