Ironically the strength training is the best way to go there to. I just got done reading some reports on it and research show that the elderly put on muscle mass at the same rate that the younger population does. It's just a matter of if they are willing to train intensely or not.
Once again the strength training is important because it has shown to be able to reverse osteoporosis to a certain degree. One research report shows that people are able to gain 1-4% of the bone density back from doing an intense weight training program. Once again aerobic training can't do that. And the other good thing about strength training for seniors is that it helps improve stability around the body. So another words if there are some joints that aren't stable, they bridge the musculature around the joints and makes them more stable and less painful. And also another thing about strength training that helps the elderly is that it also works with proprioception. As kids we develop real well. As we get older it kind of wanes a little bit and we don't do the same tasks. We do the strength training and use sit balls, balance forward and have them do some weight training work while trying to balance on those pieces of equipment. It works on proprioception it also helps with stabilization too. So those are very useful tools for the elderly.
