You want to know your soil type for a start. If you are going to add an irrigation system and plants, you want to add that in the lacking of amenity. If could be the nitrogen level or the pH level could be off. You can take soil samples from a few places in the yard and have it analyzed. Schools like Texas A&M or Texas Tech will do that for you. I think now you can even purchase soil sample kits from your local tree nursery. I don't how accurate they are, but you may want to try one of those. Basically what you are doing is figuring out what is missing from the soil. You need to make sure that you get a fertile soil for the plant you have chosen. If you feed your dirt then the dirt will grow your plant. In addition to the quality of the soil, you want to take into consideration the amount of, the light source, how much light you are getting per day, and the drainage of water smoothly away from the home.

And you know that is pretty much it. Take into consideration for placement of trees for example you don't want to put... you don't want to consider if you are going to plant a tree that you know... three inch tree that may have a 6-7 foot canopy spread on it in a year or so, if is going to be twice that size, you got to take into consideration when you put your plants around it because you don't want the plants to last 1 or 2 years and then all of a sudden they are not getting enough sun because of the canopy and then you have to go in to replace it.
