Most importantly, check with the schools you hope to attend to determine their filing deadlines are and if there are additional forms necessary; beyond that, file the FAFSA as soon after January 1, of the year you hope to attend. You will need a copy of your tax returns so file those as soon as possible as well. Some schools will allow you to estimate. Also, remember that it is a free application and it would never cost you to file a FAFSA. It someone offers you a guarantee of aid and want to charge you to file the FAFSA doesn't do it and report them to the school you hope to attend.
