There are a lot of ways to do tooth whitening, so I have to be very careful how I answer this. It's very important to know that we haven't tested all the whitening methods out there. Most bleaching methods that dentists dispense are safe. The only problem we've found is a hypersensitivity that can develop, but it typically goes away. Other than that, if we are using them correctly (which means the teeth are healthy when we start bleaching), they are safe.

The dentist has to evaluate your mouth to make sure there are no cracks or cavities in the teeth, recession of the gums, or anything like that. We have to make sure that we follow the directions for that particular bleaching technique to bleach a certain length of time and to apply it in the way that was intended. That's important for everyone to know. You need to follow the directions very specifically just like you do with anything. Even when using something safe like Tylenol, you have to make sure that you follow the directions.
