Berkeley is the oldest university in the University of California system. It is in the heart of downtown, so everything is formed around the university. Strawberry Creek runs through it with picnic areas. There is a tall tower so you can view the entire bay area and San Francisco. The Lawrence Hall of Science building has a hands-on science center for kids and adults. We have a beautiful golf course up in Berkeley Hills, a swimming lake, a botanical garden, and then there are performance venues that bring in world renowned opera singers and dance companies. There is a Greek style outdoor amphitheater here as well that accommodates approximately 8000 people. It was built in 1903. Sproul Plaza is a big hub where student musicians perform and activists speak. We have hiking, glass blowers, and a chocolate making factory here in Berkeley that you can tour. We don't have a roller coaster or a Hard Rock Café. We really try to focus on the small things like the symphony. If you want the corporate image type of nightlife, we're just 25 minutes away from San Francisco. You can get all of that there.

The Berkeley Marina directly overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The whole area has been designated a natural habitat. There are jogging paths that go for miles from Emeryville, which is south to us, up to the Regiment Area, which is north of us. There is an adventure playground for kids to build things, and there is a lot of kite flying because the wind blows under the Golden Gate Bridge so perfectly. People don't even think about fishing when they think of Berkeley, but the marina has a chartered fishing company where people can go out and fish for salmon and halibut. It's sold out every weekend, so make reservations in advance. For kids, we have the Hall of Health, which is a program sponsored by Alta Bay Medical Center and Children's Hospital of Oakland. It has a hands-on experience for children and adults with games, films, and exhibits about the human body and how to stay healthy.

In our visitor's guide we have a segment called outdoor adventures and sports which talks about the different parks in Berkeley. We have a rose garden and an aquatic park with extensive wooden castles, walkways, and other structures. We even have an Indian Rock Park with a big climbing rock.

Berkeley has a well-known architectural legacy with beautiful architectural buildings. Probably one of the most notable is the First Church of Christ Scientist building that was built around 1910. It is a national historic landmark located on White Way. There is also the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts and the Berkeley Repertory Theater which is actually on the national register of historical places. It was designed by Clinton Day in 1905 and is a really a neat building to see.
