Colorado Springs is a beautiful city. Located at the foot of Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs has lots of activities for the outdoor enthusiast.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing picnic or a thrilling rock climbing adventure, Garden of the Gods is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Once owned privately by Charles Elliott Perkins, this breathtaking four-hundred and eighty acre park was donated to the city of Colorado Springs under the condition that it remain free to the public. Garden of the Gods has unusual red rock formations that jut into the sky and seem like they were designed with rock climbers in mind. Even people who do not rock climb enjoy looking at the impressive rocks and beautiful scenery. The park also offers hiking trails, horse back riding trails, and gift shops. During the summer, visitor should also go to the Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site, which is located just across the street.
Like any downtown area, downtown Colorado Springs looks very far removed from nature. However, the Seven Falls waterfall is just a ten minute drive away. This beautiful waterfall drops down 181 feet in seven distinct sections, thus giving the waterfall its name. Visitors can climb the stairs right next to the waterfall and then continue on one of the walking trails. Seven Falls is open everyday; but the waterfall is impressive during the summer, partially because of the wonderful weather, and partially because of the light shows that take place every summer night.
While in Colorado Springs, it is impossible to miss the large mountain that stands out in the horizon. Pikes Peak is part of the Rocky Mountain chain and is the most visited mountain in the United States. Pikes Peak was the inspiration for the song "America the Beautiful;" any one who has ever been to Colorado Springs knows why. People who want to explore the mountain can hike up the Barr trail, drive up the Pikes Peak highway, or ride the Pikes Peak cog railroad. People who make it up to the summit can partake of treats sold at the gift shop; other gift shops exist at the foot of the mountain and midway up the mountain, as well.
While visiting Colorado Springs, people should take a short drive over to Manitou Springs. Located right next to Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs is a historic city with wonderful shops and restaurants. Visitors can drink from the natural springs that give the city its name. However, the springs are famous for their alleged health benefits, not for their taste. Manitou Springs is also the home of the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. These Anasazi dwellings were carved into sandstone more than 700 years ago. Visitors are actually allowed to go inside the ancient structures.
Colorado Springs is also the home of an Olympic training center and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. The Royal Gorge and the Cave of the Winds are just a short drive away from Colorado Springs, as well. There is so much to do in Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas, visitors should plan for a long, exciting vacation.
