We have people who run campgrounds with kayaks and bicycles, we have sea captains who will take you out on a sunset cruise or show you how to catch lobster, and we have public cruises that go out twice per day around the harbor teaching the history of the island. We have miniature golf and a nine-hole golf course. There are hiking trails only an hour and half away in Acadia National Park, which is the second most visited national park in the country. There is the most awesome giant playground place on the east coast there. There are all kinds of things to see and do inland and along the water. Deer Isle is off the beaten path enough that it's not going to become an over run t-shirt shop city. It's busy in the summer, but once the kids go back to school, fall is very quiet. Everybody stays open, and the winters are absolutely gorgeous.

Penobscot Bay has the most coveted sailing waters in the east coast. Sailors just love it here. We have everything from the little kayaks all the way up to the big boats. We have a famous shipyard that has helped in redesigning the bay and old sailing boats. We are the sailing capital of the world. We have giant fleets all over the place. Liberty Chimes is one of the last ones that still sails 3, 4, and 5 day cruises. It's a haven for people who want to be on the water.

In the old days, we used to call people who came here rusticators. If it's a crummy day, you sit inside, light your wood stove, have a nice cup of tea, and read a good book or play chess. People who live here don't understand, but to the people who visit here, it's great to see a different view out the window every day. Even on a cloudy, rainy, nasty day there is still a different view out the window than what they're used to, so that's all that really matters. My mother-in-law once came to visit. It was beautiful the day she arrived and the day she left, but the fog was here for five days. She had no idea where she was. She did not get to go to Acadia National Park. It's very frustrating when you don't have a lot of time, but people have to understand that you don't come to Maine for the weather. You have to be prepared for anything. When it's a nice sunny day and it doesn't get dark until 10, people can have full, busy days doing anything they want. The height of our season is August.
