Stamford is a great for a family or a romantic couple. Our peak season is spring through fall because it's so beautiful here for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and lighthouse cruises on the coastline.
Both Stamford and Norwalk have exceptional dining, but there are also three theaters in downtown Stamford with everything from live shows, concerts, and plays to comedy acts. Downtown Stamford has a shopping center that's open seven days per week. We have museums, historical societies, and an IMAX movie theater that's part of the Maritime Aquarium. There is a zoo in Bridgeport with great exhibits, a historic carousel, a Victorian greenhouse, a tropical rain forest, and beautiful gardens. Norwalk has the seasonally opened Sheffield Island Lighthouse. You can take a ferry there for a 10 room tour and see the Manhattan skyline.
We have everything from art museums to science museums to garbage museums. It depends on how you like to relax. We have historic homes, beautiful mansions, and aquariums as well as nature centers with guided trails and tours open year round. We have a few public golf courses and spectator sports as well as a greyhound racing park in Bridgeport where you can bet on the dogs. Norwalk is known for their Barrier Island and Long Island Sound for excellent birding and fly fishing.
Norwalk and Stamford have historical societies that are attractions in and of themselves. Most are open year around and are always change their exhibits. Some permanent exhibits include a 1900 hot bread store, a blacksmith's home from 1700 or 1800, and a genealogical library.
There are hundreds of parks throughout southwest Connecticut. Norwalk has at least eight or ten. Stamford has five that are pretty major. One covers 220 acres, so that's pretty large. We have the Cranberry Park, and we also have one along Water Street called the Heritage Park. They offer everything from hiking and biking to fishing. Some of them have playgrounds and ball fields, and some even have ice skating.
