Tourist Attractions in Wilmington, Delaware. Tourist Attractions in Wilmington, Delaware include Delaware Park, Brandywine Zoo, the Wilmington Blue Rocks minor league baseball team, Wilmington Western Railroad, Hagley Museum, and the Wilmington Trolley.
Delaware Park is a Thoroughbred Racing Park with a slot casino. Racing is held between April and November. The slot casino is open year round.
For kids, I would highly recommend the Brandywine Zoo. It's a small zoo that has Siberian tigers, river otters, lamas, exotic animals, monkeys, and snakes. Because it's a small zoo, it doesn't wear the parents out before the kids have a chance to see everything. The Delaware Museum of Natural History is a great place for kids. At Winterthur they have a section outdoors called the Enchanted Woods. It's a garden area designed by fairies that children go ape over. It's very clever. There is also a tall ship.
Something I haven't even mentioned yet is the Wilmington Western Railroad. It is a steam railroad that operates two steam engines with passenger service. It was founded in 1872 and runs through the Red Clay Creek Valley. It's a very nice ride. Something fun for adults and kids is the Mid-Atlantic Grand Prix indoor go-kart racing. Blue Diamond Park has a motor cross, a roller coaster, and picnic areas.
If you're into sports, we have a minor league baseball stadium with 6,500 seats that is sold out a great deal. Every body enjoys going to a ball game for only five bucks. It's the AAA minor league team for the Boston Red Sox called the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
The Hagley Museum is another spot for kids. They like a lot of exhibits where they can watch how gunpowder is made and see the water wheels turn on the river. There are a lot of other special exhibits there just as there are at the Brandywine River Museum. The Delaware History Museum is a neat museum with interactive displays. In about 45 minutes to an hour you can tour through 400 years of Delaware history. It's a great place for kids of all ages. I love it.
The Wilmington Trolley is modeled after a San Francisco cable car and costs 25 cents to ride. It takes people from the riverfront area, which is where the restaurants and train stations are, to the uptown section where the hotels, businesses, and attractions are.
