Train to do Medical Transcription From Home

    Medical transcriptionists are responsible for transcribing doctors' dictations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for medical transcriptionists is expected to grow faster than most occupations. But many interested in training for this career aren't sure where to start. There are many accredited programs that allow you to train from the comfort of your home.

    • Step 1

      Determine how much time you have available to study. Most medical transcription programs require a six- to eight-month commitment; however you are free to study any time you like. Carving out time in advance can make completing the program more possible.

      Look into Gatlin Education Services, which is an accredited online medical transcription training program. The program will take about six months to complete and will teach you the skills needed to secure a medical transcription job. The course is offered completely online, and you can request an extension for completing the program if needed.

      Check out Medical Transcription Education Center, which offers online courses and resources for job placement. You can apply to the program online and complete a course in about six to eight months.

    • Step 4

      Contact the Ashworth University medical transcription program. It is accredited by the Distance Education Council and provides a comprehensive program, extra study materials and job hunting resources upon graduation.

    • Step 5

      Apply for financial aid. Online medical transcription programs will cost you about $1,000. Some schools like Ashworth University have payment plans, but you may want to consider financial aid. You can apply online by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
