How to Transfer Money From One Credit Card to Another

By Jason Gordon

  • Overview

Transferring money from one credit card to another is usually called a "balance transfer," because you are essentially paying off one credit card by transferring your debt to another card. Credit-card companies often offer special rates to encourage you to transfer your balance to their card. If you don't receive a special offer, you can call your credit-card company and request one.
How to Transfer Money From One Credit Card to Another
    • Step 1

Contact your credit-card company using the phone number on your bill, or log in to your account online.
    • Step 2

Ask about balance transfers. If you are speaking to a representative on the phone, tell him you are interesting in transferring your balance from another card. He should be able to give you all the information you need.

    • Step 3

Make sure you understand any fees involved. Many companies charge a fee (usually between 3 and 5 percent of the balance) to transfer. This might only be worth it if they are offering you a very low APR (interest rate).
    • Step 4

Initiate the balance transfer online by selecting "Request a Balance Transfer." If both of your credit cards are at the same bank, this process will be simple. If not, you may have to give more information.
    • Step 5

Write a check. Many credit-card companies send their customers checks that can be written using funds from your credit cards. You can use these checks to pay off other cards, which is a kind of balance transfer. You can also request these checks by calling your credit-card company.
