Confirmation of your hotel reservation over the phone is not enough. Just because you booked a hotel room with a credit card doesn't mean the room will be available when you arrive. It is not uncommon for hotels to overbook, especially during high-occupancy periods, such as holiday weekends. Have the hotel fax you a signed copy of your reservation. This will assure you the room you were promised.

It is a good idea to reserve you airline and hotel reservations one month in advance, whenever possible.



Do not leave valuables unattended on the plane or in your hotel room. Most hotels have a maximum liability rate of $1,500, no matter what was stolen from your room. The maximum liability for most airlines is $1,250, even if your valuables were damaged, not stolen. Keep all valuable items in your checked baggage.

Call the airline a few hours before leaving for the airport, and ask if your flight is still exspected to be on time. This could save countless hours of wondering around the airport.

Unlike hotels and airlines, it is not a good idea to reserve a rental car too far in advance. Car rental rates are rarely guaranteed.

If late at night, while sleeping in your hotel room, you get a call from someone claiming to be a hotel staffer, and this person asks for your credit card number, hang up.
