Here are ten things that may ruin your beach vacation:
Reason #1:
You haven't planned for the appropriate weather.
It’s August at the beach. It’s hot, but you have neglected to pack hats and cool, comfortable clothing so that you end up sweltering everywhere you go. Nothing makes a person cranky like the heat, so be sure to pack cotton clothing and a brimmed hat. You can take a bandanna, wet it slightly and tie it around your neck, but there are also companies that market specially made neckwear designed to beat the heat.
On the flip side, it may be December when you’re taking a storm-watching trip to the beach. It will be cold, it will be windy, the sand may be blowing and you’re wearing shorts to walk along the beach. Not a great idea. If you are huddled behind a dune trying to shield your eyes from the sand, you aren’t having a good time. Winter at the beach can be a unique and memorable experience, as it is often an opportunity to do the best “sea treasure collecting” and can offer a chance to view some spectacular waves, but you must be dressed appropriately in order to enjoy it. Warm, layered clothing is a must along with
hooded outerwear.
Reason #2:
You forgot the sunscreen.
The sun at the beach is ruthless and the last thing you want is to be suffering from sunburn. Neglecting to use enough sunscreen, or as often as recommended, will affect your comfort. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions and use plenty. Reapply often and always after swimming. Don’t forget those often-forgotten places like the ears and back of the knees, and remember the children! They will burn easily and be miserable, and that is no way to spend a vacation.
Reason #3:
You arrived during the busy season.
Weekends in July are bound to be packed with folks trying to enjoy the beach. Spring and fall are very nice times to enjoy the surf. If the summer months are only time you can go, try to at least book your vacation during the week. Not only will there be less crowds, the lodging rates will be cheaper.
Reason #4:
You didn't follow posted swimming regulations.
Everyone wants to dip their toes in the ocean, but before doing so, take a moment to find out the suggested safety rules. Many beaches are safe to swim at, but there are also rip currents that are dangerous even to experienced ocean swimmers. Look for posted cautions regarding the safety of the beach you are at, and follow the rules. If the signs state it is unsafe to swim, don’t assume you’ll be okay. Look elsewhere for a good swimming area that is staffed with lifeguards.
Reason #5:
You have relaxed a little too much.
You may be on vacation, but don’t drop your guard entirely. Thieves may target tourists. Don’t carry large amounts of cash. Consider Traveler’s Checks instead and take advantage of your hotel’s safe, if available. Lock your car at the beach and do not leave valuables out in plain sight.
Reason #6:
You haven't planned for the kids.
Is it a family-friendly place? Are there planned youth activities? Did you pack plenty of snacks and juice or water? The beach can provide hours of entertainment for children, but being prepared will extend that enjoyment for both the kids and the adults. Take toys such as pails, balls and Frisbees, and don’t forget some plastic bags to store any seashells they may find.
Reason #7:
You have gotten dehydrated.
Neglecting to drink enough liquids will leave a person feeling weak and shaky at the least. But it can become a dangerous situation if let go long enough. Sitting in the heat of the beach can deplete a body’s fluids very quickly, so be sure that water is on the top of the list to take along, and drink plenty of it.
Reason #8:
You have no alternative activities planned.
What happens if you get to the beach and a sudden storm rolls in? You need to have other back up plans in case of inclement weather. Many seaside communities have quaint shops and storefronts to wander through, or you may need to scout out a movie theater or other attraction. Throw a deck of cards or a good novel in your luggage just in case.
Reason #9:
You forgot the camera.
You will definitely want to capture those memories. Disposable cameras are a great idea because they are inexpensive, readily available and easily replaced. Take pictures of everything! A fun thing to do is write the date and name of the beach in the sand and then pose for a picture sitting by it.
Reason #10:
You don't know the little details.
Plan ahead, then double-check your plan. Make lists of everything. Keep all of your important papers together in one spot and keep them handy. Check your flight times and weather predictions the day before. Your odds of a memorable beach vacation increase with preparation.
Enjoy your trip! The ocean is always waiting to “wave” hello to you!
