Looking out over the landscape of Brasilia it is difficult to believe that it is such a young city. In truth, the entire city was constructed in a matter of four years in the 1950’s. Visitors to Brazil’s capitol need not fear boredom while visiting this beautiful city. There are many sites to see, especially if you are a fan of modernist architecture. Follow this top-ten guide of things to do in Brasilia and you’ll see why this city is so great.

10. Pay homage to the man whose unique vision is responsible for Brasilia at the Juscelino Kubitschek monument. Commonly regarded as the founder of Brasilia, Kubitschek was president from 1956-1961. At this monument you can learn more about this man and his vision, as well an exhibit about the history of the city and documentation of its unique development.

9. Heal yourself in the mineral springs located at the Parque Nacional de Brasilia. This national park contains two natural mineral springs that have supposed healing properties. Also at the park are walking trails allowing you to appreciate the natural wonders of Brazil.

8. Enjoy some delicious middle-eastern cuisine at Lagash restaurant. Lagash is a Brasilia institution, with exotic entrees from far-away lands. Appetizers like baba ganoush tempt your palate, while the kibe (a spiced meat dish) will please your taste buds.

7. Gather some divine inspiration at the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida. This cathedral was designed by famed architect Oscar Niemeyer. Unassuming from the outside, one step inside this wide-open building will leave you awestruck. The walls and alter are made of white marble, and the stained glass overhead is truly a sight to behold.

6. Sample more of Niemeyer’s work at the Palacio do Itamaraty. One of the finest examples of the modernist architecture that dominates Brasilia, this government building is used as a reception palace for the ministry of foreign affairs. You don’t have to be a foreign dignitary to examine the architecture, as guided tours are offered daily.

5. Learn the history of the indigenous peoples at the Memorial do Pavos Indigenous. This museum houses artifacts and exhibits dedicated to preserving the cultures of the people who have lived in Brazil for centuries.

4. Enjoy a classic South American meal and feast on some paella at O Espanhol restaurant. This eatery features this classic dish, cooked either in the traditional style or with seafood only. There are also other Brazilian specialties on the menu for you to sample.

3. Take in a show at the Teatro Nacional. This theater is home to a majority of the cultural and artistic events that come to Brazil. Inquire about tickets if there’s a show in town during your visit.

2. See government in action at the Congresso Nacional. This architectural landmark is probably the most recognizable of architect Niemeyer’s work. From a distance, it looks like a tower flanked by two large bowls on either side (one up, one down). The building houses the senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

1. The best things in life are free, and so is the best attraction in all of Brasilia. It may seem odd to call a TV tower an attraction, but atop this 250 foot tower (accessible via an elevator) is the best view of all of Brasilia. Here you can see the city in its entire architectural splendor, all for free! As an added bonus, on the weekends there is a market at the tower’s base. What a perfect opportunity to pick up all those souvenir’s you forgot to buy!
