Camping Sites in Montana

What are some of the most popular campgrounds in Montana and what do they include.

Going camping is a great way to spend a family vacation. It allows a family to work together to make a successful trip and also to have fun together. Montana is a great place to take a camping trip. There are many different camping locations to choose from in the state of Montana.

Glacier National Park is one of the must see sites in Montana and has its own camp sites to go with it. There are 7 such camp sites in the park area.

Several of them have larger capacities. Apgar Campground has 192 sites which are handicap accessible. The site offers fishing, swimming and boating and also has some trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Fish Creek Campground has 180 sites available. Swimming, fishing, hiking and biking are the major draws to this area. Many Glacier Campground has 114 sites available. This campground has lots of great hiking trails and is one of the more developed of the Glacier campgrounds.

Glacier campgrounds that have smaller capacities are as follows. Avalanche Creek Campground is located within the park on the north shore of Lake McDonald. There are 50 sites in this park and guests can enjoy fishing up at Avalanche Lake. There are also boat tours on Lake McDonald available. Bowman Lake Campground has just 48 sites. This campsite also offers great fishing and hiking trails. Kintla Lake Campground has just 7 sites and is in a fairly remote area of the park. Roads have been improved to make the area a bit more accessible. Due to this, the size of trailers is restricted to no more than 18 feet. Fishing, hiking and swimming can be enjoyed here. The last of the areas campgrounds is Sprague Creek Campground. This campground has 25 sites and is restricted to tent camping only. This campground is located near Lake McDonald and offers fishing, swimming, and backpacking.

Yellowstone National Park is another popular area in Montana that has great camping opportunities. There are also 7 camp sites in this area of Montana.

Some of the larger campgrounds are the following. Indian Creek Campground is located just south of the north entrance to Yellowstone. There are 75 sites with restrooms and drinking water available. Fishing is located about a mile away and there are many hiking opportunities. Lewis Lake Campground has 85 sites with restrooms and drinking water. Boating is permitted on Lewis Lake and fishing and hiking are also popular activities. Mammoth Campground is located near the Hot Springs and has 85 sites. Fishing, horseback riding, and hiking are popular near here. There is also a visitors center and campfire talks. Norris Campground is in the Norris Geyser Basin area of the park and has 116 sites. This campground also has a visitor center and campfire talks. There is access to hiking trails here and also fishing.

The smaller campgrounds create a more intimate setting. Pebble Creek Campground is in the northeast corner of the park. There are just 32 sites here with fishing and hiking for the guests. Slough Creek Campground is also in the northeast corner with 29 sites and the same features as Pebble Creek. The final campground in the area is Tower Fall Campground with 32 camping sites. This campground has horseback riding, hiking, and fishing and also has campfire talks available to visitors.

There are so many options when it comes to camping in Montana. In addition to the above mentioned National Parks, there are also many state parks and other camping areas throughout the great state of Montana. The state is known as Big Sky Country and definitely lives up to its name.
