Part of the Grenada Islands, Carriacou is located in the eastern Caribbean, one hundred miles north of Venezuela. Carriacou is one of three major islands in the area. 1. Go to the beach! Carriacou Island has a number of secluded, pristine beaches. The sand is white and the water is blue and oh, so warm. These beaches are a great place to relax and soak up some sun.

2. Carriacou Island is known for great snorkeling and scuba diving. Large reefs that are home to a large variety of marine life, including eels, turtles, nurse sharks and more, surround the island. There are even a couple of wrecks that provide great diving opportunities. The local scuba gear shops can arrange a trip to suit your abilities and interest.

3. Deep-sea fishing is also a popular sport. There are many good charter services on the island, and you can book a day trip or just an afternoon. The fish are very abundant in these waters, and you are sure to make a catch.

4. The Carriacou Island area also has a number of small, uninhabited islands. Charter a cruise to sail around the area, or take out a catamaran and explore for yourself the natural beauty of this Caribbean getaway.

5. Carriacou has some fantastic dining. The local eateries feature French, Creole and western Indian cooking. Dining options are very laid back, and usually feature the delicious catch of the day. Ask the chef what he or she recommends and you won’t be sorry. Check out one of the Jack Iron rum shops for some fantastic rum and local color.

6. Visit a local artist. 78-year-old folk artist, Canute Caliste lives on Carriacou Island, and it is possible to visit with him and his family and purchase some of his artwork.

7. The history of Carriacou Island is everywhere. Take a stroll around the island and you will find remnants of old plantations. In Windward, the islanders have been building schooners for many years. See this centuries-old art being done right before your very eyes.

8. Carriacou Island provides many choices for souvenirs and local artistry. The local handicrafts include batik, leatherwork, and woodcarving. You can also purchase fragrant locally grown nutmeg, and jams jellies and syrups made by the women of the island.

9. Take the ferry over to Grenada and go to Grand Etang Lake and Forest Reserve. The ferry ride is enjoyable and departs several times a day. The park is located in a volcanic crater and includes a lush rainforest and scenic lake. The rainforest has plenty of wildlife and plant life to enchant you. The park has both guided and self hikes which can be anywhere from fifteen minutes long to several hours.

10. While on Grenada Island, take advantage of the nightlife. Spend a night in one of the hotels and dance to some excellent steel band music in one of the clubs.

Carriacou Island is an opportunity to try something different. The people are very friendly, the atmosphere can’t be beat and there is plenty to do. So if you are bored with the normal vacation ideas, try this instead. You won’t be sorry and it may the best vacation you’ve ever had.
