Whether you’re a city-goer or country-goer, outdoors person or scholar, June is a month full of travel opportunity. Thanks to the predictably hot weather and perennial insects, one can fairly easily know what environmental factors to anticipate during his or her June vacation. Here are a few ideas for unique travel destinations during the month of June.
Head to the mountains. Pack up your family, load up the car and hit the road for a week-long trip. In most areas, you can rent cabins that will help to make your stay more comfortable, but if you don’t mind roughing it, plan to spend the week camping. Chart out the location of nearby waterfalls and plan to take day-hikes, ending in a cool, mountain water bath. (You’ll deserve the cold shower after a few hours on the steamy trails.)
Many mountain destinations also boast of cliff jumping locations, for the more fearless in your bunch. Head out for the nearest cliff-jumping rock – but be sure before you jump that there is the expected level of water in the pool below (ie: don’t cliff jump during a drought.)
Head out west and spend a week on a ranch. Wyoming is known for its horse back riding ranches. You and your family can wander the grounds and take in the green hills and blue sky of the old fashioned American West. Find out where the nearest town is and spend a day (or afternoon) ducking in and out of the shops. Try on that cowboy hat you’ve been dreaming about since you were a kid.
Do a little research and find out where the nearest white water rafting takes place. Chances are, there will be a river nearby beckoning you and your family. Take the plunge! And take pictures.
For those city-goers, spend this June checking out a city you’ve never been to before. Head south the Austin, Texas and wonder the streets during their annual art-car festival. Head due northwest to Seattle for a taste of the famous Seattle fish market fish. Down on the east coast you can stop into Charleston, South Carolina for a little beach time. Charleston has a charming historic district that you can wander on rentable two-seater bikes with loved ones.
You can always plan your June travel around festivals. If you’re really into folk music, for example, check out where the national folk music festival is this year. If you love film, do a search for local or national film festivals. Plan to travel to those cities in some different way – by train, cross country car trip...or even by boat! Make a journey out of getting to your destination.
Once you are there, take in the scenery, the smells and the local fare. Take photos, record your experiences in a journal and send yourself some postcards. And as with every big vacation, be sure to buy that one memorable item that you can keep around the house once you return home – be it a pot for your kitchen or a charm for your bracelet. Now take off and have fun!
