Fiji has an excellent reputation in the international surfing community. Experienced surfers seek out the exciting reef breaks found on the waters off Fiji. Fiji also offers secluded locations, often accessible only by boat, and traditional Fijian hospitality, culture and dining.
The breaks off Tavarua in the Mamanuca Group and off Beqa and Kadavu in the Southern Islands are known to be the best as well as Namotu Left and Cloudbreak in the Mamanuca Group. There are also other locations with excellent breaks. These can be found around Beqa and Kadavu, as well as Frigates Passage, which is a left-handed break in the middle of the ocean and Serua Rights, a right-hander and Pipe, a left-hander. These breaks are not for beginners. Beginners will find that the really only decent beach breaks suitable for them are on the south coast of Viti Levu, which is the main island.
The best time to plan to visit Fiji for a surfing vacation is April to December with peak months being June to August even though this is the windy season for Fiji. After deciding on the dates for the trip to Fiji, another decision that will have to be made is whether to carry a surfboard or to purchase or lease one once there. Surfers can bring their own surfboards, but will need to check with the airline carrier they are planning to use for baggage restrictions and any extra costs that may be charged. The local airlines will also need to be contacted well in advance so arrangements can be made with them for the surfboard. Of course, the alternative to carrying a personal surfboard is to visit a local surf shop when they arrive in Fiji and purchase or rent a board.
Finding accommodations on the Fiji Islands that cater to surfers does not take much research. Among these resorts is Namotu Surf Resort, which caters exclusively to surfers. This resort is on a very small island and can only accomadate a few visitors. The surfing here is primarily on Namotu and Wilkes Reefs. With only 6 bures available, the number of guests are limited and the stay will be expensive. Tavarua Island Resort is another resort that caters to surfers. Tavarua Island Resort is definitely a place that the hardcore surfer should consider visiting, as the surf is consistent and world class. The disadvantages to staying at this resort is the isolation from the rest of Fiji, creating a difficult situation for the surfer interested in experiencing Fijian culture and the cost of the stay will not be cheap. Another surf resort is Nagigia Island Surf Resort, which offers the opportunity to surf Fiji’s left and right-handers depending on the wind, tide and swell directions. Nagigia, considered by most to be the most relaxed surfing resort, is complete with a friendly atmosphere and plenty to do on non-surfing days. Lalati Resort, located on Beqa Island offers the surfer a well-appointed traditional Fijian bure accommodation, great food along with an excellent surfing experience. The only main island resort that offers surfers "Frigates",“Pipe”, “Mata Point”, “Resorts Left”, “Serua Rights”, “Vunaniu Rights”,and “Black Rock” is Waidroka Bay Resort, making this the perfect resort for the surfer who is searching for these. Waidroka also offers three styles of accommodations from private cottages to dorm rooms. This is only a few of the surfing resorts available on Fiji, other resorts to consider are Batiluva Beach Resort and Seashell Cove Resort and as well as many others. These resorts can all be researched further using the internet.
A surfing vacation spent in the Fiji Islands can be a very enjoyable trip with a little planning and some research to determine where the best accommodations as well as the best surfing conditions are available.
