Seniors enjoy vacations just as much as younger people. In fact, they have more time to enjoy vacations and travel usually. However, they also will have more limitations than younger people, so that is something to keep in mind when planning a trip for senior citizens.
There are many ideas that are fun for seniors, but also are realistic for what they can do. Having a fancy night where they can dress up, maybe have their hair/nails/make-up done and dance (if possible) and socialize with other seniors can be an exciting night for the elderly. Pay attention, however, to the time that the event is held. Seniors often go to bed earlier than younger people, and may not be able to keep up the same pace as younger people. However, a night with music from their generation, where they can act young again, have a wonderful dinner and drink bubbly would be an awfully great night for a lot of senior citizens. Giving the seniors some sort of favor to leave with, such as a bouquet of flowers or monogrammed mug would also be an incredibly thoughtful and memorable gesture. Also, maybe at one point of the night, having a little film with events from their generation would be a nice gesture that they would no doubt appreciate.
Having an exercise class would also be a great adventure and very useful for many seniors. There are many videos out there that cater to a senior’s abilities; however, seniors love to see live people (especially younger people), and so if possible, a young person trained in how to deal with and talk to seniors and with knowledge about senior exercise and their capabilities would no doubt be a wonderful experience for all involved. It is a great way to get seniors involved in exercise, even while they enjoy their vacation time.
Visiting a petting zoo while on vacation would be a nice idea. The elderly usually love to see animals, and it can even take on the form of therapy for them. It is good for them to be in contact with many different organisms and life forms. Maybe a trip to an exotic garden while on vacation in an exotic place would also be a nice idea. Having a tour guide explain about the different kinds of animals and plants would be great. Education is a wonderful thing for people of all ages. It also may help ward off Alzheimer’s disease.
Having some sort of scavenger hunt would no doubt be a lot of fun for seniors. This would be an ideal activity, since they would be using their brains to find relevant items, plus they would have to be active and possibly outside with nature. The scavenger hunt would probably not be as long or as complicated as if it were adults of a younger age, but it can still be a lot of fun and even educational for older adults. Having the seniors find rare fruits or vegetables, rare insects/animals, and toys would be a great idea. Possibly having them work with a buddy would also be a nice change for them, and encourage them to socialize. If possible, a very nice idea would be for them to match up with a child buddy. A 5 year old and a 90 year old could become instant friends; and they could each appreciate each other’s knowledge and sense of adventure.
Having a rest time for seniors would be integral. Although there are many fun activities for seniors, resting time is also essential.
