Cape Town, South Africa is quickly becoming one of the most sought after vacation destinations in the world. Robben Island contains the prison that once held many black political freedom fighters, including Nelson Mandela. The prison is now a World Heritage Site and offers an unforgettable glimpse into the apartheid era. Another good history lesson can be found in the Castle of Good Hope. It is the oldest building in South Africa and took twelve years to complete. It offers cultural and military history dating back to 1652.
Great news for you animal lovers out there because Cape Town is full of animal exhibits. First and foremost is the spectacular Two Oceans Aquarium. This is a great place for adults and children alike. The aquarium offers many displays including the popular Predator Exhibit, which has a walk through tunnel where you can view sharks, many different types of fish, turtle, and rays. For those of you who prefer your animals on land there is World of Birds, a bird and wildlife sanctuary that houses over 3000 birds in their natural surroundings. Speaking of birds, why not visit the Boulders Penguin Colony. Located on Boulders Beach, it contains wooden walkways to admire the penguins in their natural habitat. Another location that offers lovely scenery and animals for viewing is Cape Point located in Cape Peninsula National Park. It contains some of the highest cliffs in the world and a menagerie of animals including baboons, zebras, and over 250 species of birds.
Now you’re done with the sightseeing and history lessons, and you’re ready for some entertainment. There is definitely no shortage of this in Cape Town. Check out the V&A Waterfront, which offers countless shops, restaurants, pubs, and live entertainment. Some may want to visit the Cape Town Winelands with their award winning wines.
