Let's say you walk into the room, and somebody is holding onto the buzz bar of your electrical panel. You can see that they can't let go. When you get shocked, one of two things happens. It depends on how high the voltage is. A high voltage would be 5000 volts or 13,000 volts, which you might find in a high line outside your home. With high voltage, most of the time it will knock a person off the power source. There is just so much energy there that it has a tendency to just throw the person away from the source. With lower voltage, it causes your muscles to contract. You might find lower voltage in the home. Typically, what happens is when a person touches a buzz bar, a wire, or something, it causes your muscles to contract. A lot of time, you will actually grab the source with the death grip. You can't let go of it even if you wanted to. You might be thinking in your mind, 'I got to let go of this or I got to get away from this electrical wire.' However, you physically can't. In the event that you found somebody in a situation like that, naturally you don't want to be the second potential fatality. If you could quickly shut off the power source, that would be the number one thing to do. Failing that, you might try to pull the person off. However, number one, make sure that you are not grounded yourself. If you are outside in your bare feet, you have to be really careful. If you have well insulated shoes, you can be a little less careful because technically, you are isolated from the ground through your shoes. So, you could grab the person by their belt, and pull him off the source. You could also pick up a two by four, and push him or knock him off the source. If somebody was actually being shocked when you walked up, those would be primarily the two best things to do.

It is more typical to walk up on somebody lying on the floor. They may have passed out from being shocked. You would surmise that's what happened because they may have their tools laying there with them. At that point, you would check the pulse. Everybody should have first aid training. Lots of times, people stop breathing. So, you would do your first aid resuscitation techniques. Go call the ambulance before you do anything else. Then try to save the person.
